After more than a decade of conservative Bush/ Reagan rule over America, drag queens began popping up all over: RuPaul became an industry unto herself, Hollywood heroes suddenly donned dresses in a totally different way than the misogynistic days of Milton Berle, the Harlem Ballroom scene and voguing were gobbled up by everyone from Madonna to Taylor Dayne, queens of all kinds began walking fashion runways for Mugler, and even Robin Williams got in on the fun with starring roles and cameos in multiple drag films. But where did it all come from? Why did heads of industry suddenly decide drag was marketable? How did drag queens sell their personas to these new avenues? This class will showcase how drag queens made this happen themselves. We'll be talking about everything from club kids at the Pyramid to queer performance art that used all the tricks of drag, to the parties of Susanne Bartsch and London's Blitz kids. Come learn from the Doctor of Drag how queens made it happen, and let's talk about how it's happening again and what's different this time around.

Queer activist and graduate student by day, fierce entertainer by night. Not much difference between the two really other than more make-up and wigs at night :) And even that... less so of late. |
